Nellosana habitus
Containing group: Nanosellini

Introduction

Nellosana is composed of four species, all currently found in New Zealand (Johnson, 1982). Members of this group represent some of the largest nanosellines known, ranging 0.54 to 0.88 mm in length. Specimens have been collected in rotted wood or associated with bracket fungi.

Characteristics

Nellosana can be separated from other nanosellines by its large size, 11 antennal segments, and the mesosternal process extending well into the region of the metasternum. Males of one species posses a large 'spur' on the mesotarsus, a feature absent in other Nanosellinae.

The aedeagus is proportionally large, and the varying spermatheca designs somewhat modified.

Geographic Distribution

Johnson (1982) erected the genus Nellosana and named four species from New Zealand. Locality records include Bay of Plenty, Northland, and Auckland.
